Fool’s Gold

When I think about March, my mind sometimes drifts to leprechauns—those mischievous little figures dressed in green, guarding their legendary pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. According to the story, if you could just find where the rainbow touches the earth, unimaginable riches would be yours. How many have chased that illusion? How many hours have been spent pursuing something that was never really there? It’s a charming legend—but it reflects a very real human tendency: we often chase what glitters, hoping it will satisfy.

That same pattern shows up in something prospectors once called “fool’s gold.” The mineral, known as Pyrite, shines with a golden hue and can easily be mistaken for the real thing. For centuries, eager miners picked up sparkling stones, convinced they had found treasure, only to discover they were holding something far less valuable. Gold is soft, rare, and enduring. Pyrite is brittle and tarnishes over time. The difference may not be obvious at first glance—but under testing, the truth is revealed.

Spiritually speaking, we can make the same mistake. We can spend our lives gathering what looks impressive—success, reputation, wealth, even outward religious activity—only to discover that it holds no eternal weight. The Lord speaks plainly in Book of Isaiah 64:6: “All our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” That is a sobering truth. The very things we might present to God as proof of our worth can amount to nothing when measured by His holiness. Like someone trying to cash in pyrite at the bank, we may confidently approach the Authority, only to find that what we valued was never true treasure at all.

But Scripture does not leave us without hope. When Samuel went to anoint the next king in 1 Samuel 16, he was impressed by outward appearance. Yet God corrected him: “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” God’s standard is not external shine but internal surrender. He examines the core of who we are—our motives, our affections, our devotion. The question is not how polished we appear, but whether our hearts belong fully to Him.

So, what are we chasing today? What have we allowed to settle into our hearts and define our pursuits? Book of Proverbs 4:23 reminds us that everything flows from the heart, and Gospel of Luke 6:45 teaches that our words and actions reveal what fills it. God’s Word shines like a searching light, exposing what is hidden in the shadows. Will it uncover fool’s gold—temporary glitter and misplaced priorities—or a humble and contrite spirit that treasures Christ above all?

“Fool’s gold” becomes more than a mineral; it becomes a warning. Not everything that sparkles is worth pursuing. The world constantly advertises its version of treasure, but Scripture calls us to seek what lasts: faith, holiness, love, and obedience to Christ. When our eyes are fixed on Him, He teaches us to discern the difference between what merely glitters and what is eternally golden. And in that discernment, we are spared from spending our lives chasing a rainbow that was never meant to satisfy.
